This is the “nazar boncuğu” Mary and I have hanging above our bed. “Nazar boncuğu” is apparently Turkish for “pretty glass thing that will protect you from the evil eye, but strangely looks like other cultures’ symbols for the evil eye.”
We got it from Mary’s old apartment – she sublet her room for the summer, and when the girl moved out she left this behind. So I hung it above our bed – made for a nice light switch handle.
We only found out that it was our last line of defense against the forces of evil later on, when Tom visited our apartment for the first time. He saw this hanging there and just about wet himself from excitement.
